Song Length Calculator: BPM, Bars and Average Song Length
Work out a song's length from BPM and bars with a free calculator (sections, timestamps, Spotify's 30-second mark), plus 2025's average hit length: 3:24.

On this page
A song's length is its number of bars times the beats per bar, times 60, divided by the tempo: seconds = bars × beats per bar × 60 ÷ BPM. In 4/4 at 120 BPM, one bar lasts 2 seconds, so a 72-bar song runs 2:24. For reference, the median 2025 Billboard Year-End Hot 100 hit ran 3:13 (Crawlora Song Length Index).
Below: the formula, a free calculator, a ready-made table by tempo, and what the public data says about how long songs are right now.
The formula
One beat lasts 60 ÷ BPM seconds. A bar lasts that times the number of beats in the bar (4 in 4/4, 3 in 3/4, 6 in 6/8 if you count eighth notes as the beat). Multiply by the number of bars and you have the length.
- Seconds per bar (4/4) = 240 ÷ BPM
- Song length = bars × seconds per bar
- Bars needed for a target length (4/4) = target seconds × BPM ÷ 240
Add any time that isn't on the grid, such as a free-time intro, a fade-out or silence at the end, separately.

Set the tempo and the time signature, then the bars of each section. The calculator gives the length of each section and of the whole song, where each section starts, what a listener is hearing at Spotify's 30-second mark, and how many bars a target length takes. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.

2:24 in total, 72 bars
- At 30 seconds, when Spotify starts counting the stream, the listener is in the verse, bar 12.
- 3:00 at 120 BPM is 90 bars.
seconds = bars × beats per bar × 60 ÷ BPM. In 6/8 the eighth note counts as the beat. Timestamps take the grid as starting at 0.
Song length by tempo (72-bar song in 4/4)
Calculated with the formula above; checked October 28, 2026. The 72 bars here are a common pop layout: intro 4, verse 16, chorus 8, verse 16, chorus 8, bridge 8, chorus 8, outro 4.
| BPM | Seconds per bar | 72-bar song length | Bars for 3:00 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70 | 3.43 | 4:07 | 52.5 |
| 87 | 2.76 | 3:19 | 65.25 |
| 90 | 2.67 | 3:12 | 67.5 |
| 100 | 2.40 | 2:53 | 75 |
| 120 | 2.00 | 2:24 | 90 |
| 140 | 1.71 | 2:03 | 105 |
87 BPM is in the table because it was the average tempo of 2025's Hot 100 #1 hits, the slowest average since 2018, according to Hit Songs Deconstructed.
The same structure at 140 BPM lasts almost exactly half as long as at 70 BPM. If a producer counts a 140 BPM beat in half time, count bars the way they do, or the calculator will give you double or half the real length.

Two notes on reading these numbers. The 2025 mean is higher than the median because a few long hits pull it up; Crawlora names Kendrick Lamar's "Euphoria" (6:24) and Bad Bunny's "Baile Inolvidable" (6:08). And these are US chart hits, not all music, so they describe what charted, not a rule for your genre.
Average song length by decade
Mean and median length of Billboard Year-End Hot 100 hits, measured on Spotify's current versions (Crawlora song-length-data on GitHub, CC BY 4.0, checked October 28, 2026):
| Decade | Mean | Median |
|---|---|---|
| 1960s | 2:51 | 2:44 |
| 1970s | 3:52 | 3:35 |
| 1980s | 4:14 | 4:06 |
| 1990s | 4:25 | 4:21 |
| 2000s | 4:03 | 3:58 |
| 2010s | 3:42 | 3:40 |
| 2020s (to 2025) | 3:18 | 3:15 |
The yearly peak was 4:39 in 1992, then length fell 31% to 3:13 by 2019. From 2019 to 2025 the median barely moved (-0.3%) while the mean rose 5.5% (Crawlora).
How long should a song be?
No platform sets a required length for a normal song. What the public data shows is that most charting hits now sit between three and three and a half minutes, and that 2025 hits with staying power ran shorter on average (3:17) with shorter intros, averaging 11 seconds, according to Hit Songs Deconstructed.
One platform rule is worth knowing when you plan the structure: Spotify counts a stream when a listener plays a song for at least 30 seconds (How your streams are counted). The calculator's section timestamps show what part of the song a listener hears before that mark. At 120 BPM in 4/4, 30 seconds is 15 bars, so a 4-bar intro plus a 16-bar verse means the chorus starts after the mark.

Where does Loud fit?
Loud doesn't touch the song: it's what comes after. We make Loud, which builds your website and link in bio from your Spotify and makes a page for every release, with the listen buttons and a sign-up for your fan list, so the people who find the track can hear about the next one.
